Kale is certainly the vegie of the moment and can be found in every trendy juice bar and cafe. And there are obvious reasons behind that. This queen of greens stands out as a superstar because of its nutritional richness and delightful flavour and is being dubbed one of the healthiest foods on the planet! But why settle for ridiculously expensive and slathered in pesticide ‘farmers cabbage’ from the supermarket when you can easily grow your own? Kale is a great addition to a little green thumbs’ garden bed as it requires very little attention, looks great and is less susceptible to pests than its cabbage counterparts. So let’s get growing!
Kale seeds – whatever variety that tickles your fancy! We chose Tuscan Kale with its dark green ‘dinosaur’ leaves
Note: Kale is best grown in cooler temperatures so sow in February-March for a winter harvest. In Australia, there are some places where this plant is more comfortable growing comparing to other areas. Cities in cooler parts of Australia like Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Canberra, and Hobart can be more suitable than other areas like Queensland and the Northern Territory for example.
Regardless of where you live you can get your new raised garden beds from us as we are available in all major cities in Australia.
1. Choose a spot for your raised garden bed that gets full sun.
2. Prepare your garden bed with potting mix leaving a couple of centimetres from the top.
3. Sow your seeds about 30cm apart. You can sow 3-4 seeds together and thin them out later.
4. Keep the soil lightly moist. Your seeds should germinate in around a week and will be ready to harvest in about 2 months.
5. Apply organic mulch to young plants to keep the soil moist and cool and control weeds.
6. Feed monthly with a liquid fertilizer.
A fun way to get your kids to enjoy their greens!
